OneDrive is free online storage that comes with your Microsoft account. It’s like an extra hard drive that’s available from any of the devices you use. You no longer need to email files to yourself or carry around (and possibly lose) a USB flash drive. Instead, whether you’re on your laptop and working on a presentation, viewing photos from your last family vacation on your new tablet, or on your phone reviewing your shopping list, you can get to your files in OneDrive.
Getting started with OneDrive is easy. You can add files already on your PC to OneDrive by either copying them over or moving them from your PC. When you save new files, you can choose to save them to OneDrive so you can get to them from any device and share them with other people. And, if your PC has a built-in camera, you can automatically save copies of the photos in your camera roll to OneDrive, so you'll always have a backup.
Files stored in OneDrive for Business are subject to the SJCL Acceptable Use Policy and Student Handbook Policy. SJCL has also identified that certain types of electronically stored information be maintained and documented properly. Keep in mind that there are guidelines for electronically stored information.
A list of all policies and guidelines is located on the SJCL Right to know and IT Services pages.
Faculty and Staff
OneDrive for Business is not meant to be your primary storage location for SJCL or personal data. It is meant to be supplementary to your Documents and Department Share storage locations, and for collaboration with SJCL and non-SJCL individuals. While permissions are managed by SJCL IT for Documents and Department Share folders, this is not the case for OneDrive for Business. This space is managed by the individual and users should be careful when sharing in OneDrive for Business, to ensure proper security of the files located here.

Adding your files to OneDrive
There are a few different ways to put your existing files on OneDrive. First, decide if you want to keep the original files on your PC and put copies of them on OneDrive, or if you want to cut and move them from your PC to OneDrive.
To copy files to OneDrive using the OneDrive app
- On the Start screen, tap or click OneDrive to open the OneDrive app.
- Tap or click folders to browse to the location on OneDrive where you want to add the files.
- Swipe in from the top or bottom edge of the screen or right-click to open the app commands, and then tap or click Add files.
- Browse to the files you want to upload, tap or click to select them, and then tap or click Copy to OneDrive.
To move files to OneDrive using the OneDrive app
When you move files, you're removing them from your PC and adding them to OneDrive.
- Tap or click the arrow next to OneDrive and choose This PC.
- Browse to the files you want to move, and then swipe down on them or right-click them to select them.
- Tap or click Cut.
- Tap or click the arrow next to This PC and choose OneDrive to browse to a folder in your OneDrive.
- Swipe in from the top or bottom edge of the screen or right-click to open the app commands, and then tap or click Paste.
To move files to OneDrive using File Explorer
When you move files, you're removing them from your PC and adding them to OneDrive. Drag files from the file list in the right pane to OneDrive in the left pane.
To save files to OneDrive from an app
You can save files from your apps directly to OneDrive. You’ll have the choice to save to OneDrive or to other locations, including to your PC. Tap or click the arrow in the upper-left corner to change your location to OneDrive (if it isn’t selected already).
To save files to OneDrive from a desktop app
When you're using a desktop app like Microsoft Office Word or Paint, you can also save files directly to OneDrive. Click Save in the app you’re using, and then tap or click OneDrive in the left pane.
Saving to OneDrive automatically
On most PCs, OneDrive is the recommended location that appears when you save Microsoft Office files (like Word docs and Excel worksheets), PDFs, and other documents. And, if your PC has a built-in camera, you can automatically save copies of the photos you take directly to OneDrive so you’ll always have a backup. To make sure your PC is set up to save automatically, check your OneDrive settings.
- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.) - For documents, tap or click OneDrive, and then turn on Save documents to OneDrive by default.
- For photos, tap or click Camera roll, and then choose Upload photos at good quality, or for higher resolution copies, choose Upload photos at best quality.
OneDrive for Mac
Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the OneDrive app for Mac. Get the free app in the Mac app store.
What does the OneDrive folder do?
When you install the OneDrive app for Mac, a copy of your OneDrive is downloaded to your Mac and put in the OneDrive folder. This folder is kept in sync with OneDrive. If you add, change, or delete a file or folder on the OneDrive website, the file or folder is added, changed, or deleted in your OneDrive folder and vice versa.
To upload files to OneDrive automatically, just copy or move the files to your OneDrive folder using the Finder, or save them in your OneDrive folder from an app. Files you upload this way can be up to 10 GB in size. If you installed the OneDrive app on other computers, the files will automatically be added to the OneDrive folders on them, too.
You can also use the Finder to rename and delete files, create new folders, and move files around in your OneDrive folder. The changes will automatically be made in OneDrive and your other computers that have the OneDrive app installed.
Tip
To rotate photos in OneDrive, open them in Preview, rotate them, and then save them. The photos will be automatically updated in OneDrive.
If you use a lot of storage space in OneDrive, it might take a long time to download all your files when you first install the OneDrive app. For tips on maximizing the transfer speed, see Maximize upload and download speed.
Do I have to install the OneDrive app on all my computers?
No. If you don't want to keep all the files in your OneDrive on a computer, you can still work with your OneDrive on that computer by going to the OneDrive website.
Why do I have to confirm my OneDrive folder on my Mac?
OneDrive is following recommendations from Apple that Mac OS X apps have sandboxing. With sandboxing, the OneDrive app will access only the files it needs on your Mac. This means we need to ask you to confirm the location of your OneDrive folder. If you select any folder other than your current OneDrive folder, you'll have to go back through setup and re-download the contents of your OneDrive. To learn more about app sandboxing, search the Apple website.
How do I show or hide the OneDrive app icon in the Dock?
The OneDrive app icon is hidden by default. To show it in the Dock, click to deselect the Hide Dock icon checkbox in Preferences.
Can I choose folders in my OneDrive that I don't want to sync on my Mac?
Yes. When you first set up OneDrive, click Choose folders to sync. If you didn't do this when you set up OneDrive, you can do it in Preferences:
- Click the OneDrive icon in the menu bar.
- Click Preferences, click the Choose Folders tab, and then click Choose Folders.
For each folder, you can choose to sync everything in the folder, individual folders within the folder, and files that aren't in any subfolders within the folder. If you choose to sync only some items, new items you add to the OneDrive folder on your Mac will sync to OneDrive, but items you add to OneDrive from the website or other devices won't be synced to your Mac unless they're in the folders you chose to sync. If you choose to stop syncing folders on your Mac, they'll be deleted from the OneDrive folder on that computer, but they'll remain in OneDrive.
Note
You can't choose individual files you want to sync, and you can't choose to sync files or folders shared with you.
Can I change the name or location of my OneDrive folder?
No, you can't currently do this. If you use the Finder to rename or move your OneDrive folder, OneDrive will stop working.
Can I use OneDrive to get to files and folders on my Mac that aren’t saved in my OneDrive folder?
No, the Fetch files feature is available only on PCs. This also means you can't stream videos that are on a Mac from the OneDrive website.
Can I change the account I use with OneDrive?
You can change the account you use with OneDrive, but you can't use the folder with multiple accounts at the same time. To change the account you use with OneDrive, choose Sign Out from the menu bar.
Can I recover files or folders I deleted?
Check the Trash for files you deleted from the OneDrive folder on your Mac.
Note
For more help recovering lost files or folders, contact customer support.
How do I uninstall the OneDrive app?
Just drag the OneDrive app to the Trash.
Note
The OneDrive app requires Mac OS X Lion. It isn't supported on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier versions of the Mac OS.
