Amount: $5,000 (in tuition)

San Joaquin College of Law (SJCL) established the Hmong Language Scholarship (HLS) to assist incoming SJCL students who are proficient in the Hmong language in their pursuit of a legal education. The purpose of the HLS is to promote equity and inclusion at the law school and in the legal community and to encourage and assist individuals who desire to serve the legal needs of the local Hmong community.

The HLS is a Tuition Reduction Scholarship which can only be applied to the recipient's first year of law school at SJCL. Fifty percent of the HLS ($2,500) will be applied to the fall semester of the recipient's first year at the school; the remaining 50% ($2,500) will be applied to the spring semester of the recipient's 1L year. The HLS is not transferrable to another individual or institution. If the recipient withdraws from or is withdrawn from SJCL prior to the spring semester or fails to enroll in classes in the spring, they will not be awarded the spring $2,500 tuition reduction.

The HLS is awarded to one exceptional, qualified applicant each year. Recipients must accept the HLS within 30 days of the day it is awarded.

"Receiving my swearing-in ceremony at the Hmong Memorial in front of the Fresno Superior Court was a very special moment for my family, and for me. This was a testament to my family's journey - and to all refugees and immigrants."
