Under the direction of the Clinic Director, Law Clerk will be dedicated to conducting research, record review, and writing for complex cases. The Law Clerk will also be responsible for monitoring the workload and deadlines for pending BREN Clinic matters. The Law Clerk will conduct intake and follow-up consultations with BREN Clinic clients.
Beginning January 2025 and expected end May 2025, must be flexible to work between the hours of 9-5pm. Not to exceed a total of 10 hours per week.
Minimum Requirements:
- Completion of Special Education Law class
- Currently enrolled at SJCL
- Eligible for the Federal Work-Study
- Intermediate/Advance skills with Microsoft products, Adobe Acrobat, and Clio GROW and Manage
- Keyboarding minimum of 35-40 words per minute
- Ability to work up to 10 hours a week.
Desired:
Significant experience representing school age children with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) preferred. Additionally, preference will be given to individuals who have completed the Special Education elective and BREN Clinical units at SJCL.
Advanced knowledge of and ability to employ correct English/Spanish usage and translation, verbal and written, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation highly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
An individual must be able to effectively execute the clinic’s mission. Individuals in this position must have the ability to handle legal research and analysis. The position requires you to be reliable, responsible, flexible, organized and possess a high work ethic and exercise good judgment. You must also maintain strict attention to detail, independent follow-through, respond constructively to changing situations, protect confidential information and create good working relationships with a diverse staff, faculty, student, and client population. Furthermore, you must also learn and apply college policies and procedures.
Essential Job Requirements:
- Request and review educational records and prepare legal recommendation based on said review
- Monitor pending caseload deadlines
- Ensure files are well organized and up to date; entering notes in the case management system; watching deadlines for timely filing of documents;
- Conduct thorough legal research and present complete analysis on topics of special education law;
- Complete memorandums based on research findings;
- Able to collaborate with clinic director and intern law clerks to field questions and provide initial support and mentorship, as needed;
- Prepare demand letters, settlement proposals, and other written documents;
- Prepare and file Compliance Complaints with CDE and Due Process Complaints with OAH;
- Conduct client intake interviews and follow-up consultations;
- Display a high level of discretion in dealing with confidential information;
- Excellent customer service skills (written and verbal) and desire to work with diverse population of people;
- Assist the clinic director in student coordination specifically related to office and file protocol;
- Plan, promote, facilitate, execute, and advertise BREN Clinic programs to students;
- Must be able to function in a high-volume environment to ensure individual and team goals at achieve in compliance with funding of multiple grants;
- Maintain regular on time
Hourly Pay: $16.50 - $18.00 per hour, non-exempt

Working Conditions:
Primarily working indoors in a heated/air-conditioned workspace.
