Overview of The Position
The Case Worker, supports ELF’s immigration services, providing direct and indirect support to staff and/or clients in service areas including Adjustment of status, Consular Process, Extension of Non-immigrant status, DACA applications, Naturalization, Acquisition and Derivation of Citizenship, Legal Permanent Resident Renewals, Advanced Parole, Parole in Place, U-VISA, VAWA, etc. They will support clients independently and collaboratively under the supervision of a DOJ representative or staff attorney by providing direct client services, educational workshops, information and referral support, community outreach, etc.
Qualifications
- Current 2,3, or 4L Law Student in good standing with SJCL
- Eligible for Federal Work-Study
- Must have completed course work as part of their legal education and/or relevant experience in the immigration services field. Desire to pursue a career in immigration-related services, advocacy, etc.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English and another language such as Spanish, Hmong,
- Submit COVID vaccination record or self-attest and/or eligible exemption. This is done directly with the site location.
- Live scan background check & fingerprint clearance and/or eligible exemption.
- Complete harassment prevention training with site location.
Primary Responsibilities
Direct Client Services & Case Management:
- Manages the assessment, completion, and filing of California Department of Social Services (CDSS) immigration cases assigned by the Director of Immigration Service or designees. Provides direct immigration legal services to Spanish speakers, refugees, and immigrant communities in the Central San Joaquin Valley.
- Performs legal research, gathers information, and analyzes documents for assigned client cases. Drafts, assembles, and files cases, including I-601 Waivers, Naturalizations, DACAs, Advance Parole, TPS, applications for adjustment of status, and Non-immigrant U Visa petitions.
- Presents during outreach event presentations, such as know-your-rights workshops and legal screenings, to increase awareness of other immigration relief, legal rights, and responsibilities. Accompanies applicants to USCIS or EOIR to interviews.
Indirect Client Services & Program Support
- Performs administrative tasks related to scheduling client meetings, filing documents, digitizing records, etc.
- Attends legal meetings to review cases and collaborate with other departments. Shares legal resources with other employees, non-paid staff, and partner organizations or community members. Maintains and updates case records in case management software such as cerenade.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with other agencies and community-based legal providers.
- Represents the Education & Leadership Foundation at community meetings and forums about legal services and community needs.
- Attends training and courses to remain up to date on changing immigration law and policies.
Additional Duties:
- Confidentiality/Privacy compliance and treats all client, member, and employee information as sensitive and confidential.
- Quality Improvement - participate in quality improvement activities and contribute towards the overall performance improvement of the department and organization.
- Safety - all employees will participate in the ELF safety program.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Physical Space: when performing administrative tasks, they will work in a shared, open office space with a designated workspace and issued work computer for in-office administrative tasks.

- Team Dynamics: works independently in day-to-day tasks and works collaboratively alongside other staff, volunteers, contractors, or interns to support evolving community outreach & support needs.
- Travel: some travel may be required to perform job duties. Proof of insurance will be required.
Physical Abilities:
Hear - able to hear staff on the phone and communicate verbally over the phone or voice text. Speak - able to speak clearly when communicating information to clients and staff. See - able to read memos, computer screens, personnel forms, and clinical and administrative documents. Touch - able to type, transcribe notes, move a mouse, manipulate a keyboard as a part of basic office tasks, client meetings, Sit/Stand - able to work at a seated or standing workstation for extended periods of time. Personal Mobility - able to drive or navigate private or public transportation to attend work, trainings, workshops, or events within Fresno County and surrounding areas.

Hourly Pay: This is a non-exempt position at an at-will employer. Compensation is $20 per hour. Paid sick leave available.
