Position Overview

Oasis Legal Services is seeking law student interns who are passionate about immigrants’ rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and providing legal services to underrepresented low-income communities. Prior knowledge of immigration law or asylum law, while not necessary, is a plus. Legal staff will train interns on the relevant law and procedure and will supervise interns closely.

Oasis Legal Services is a nonprofit legal services organization with offices in Berkeley and Fresno, California. We proudly provide quality legal immigration services to under-represented low-income LGBTQ+ communities. Founded in May 2017, Oasis is now one of the country's largest providers of immigration services to the LGBTQ+ community and serves over 800 clients a year.

Specializing in affirmative asylum cases as well as VAWA, lawful permanent residency, citizenship, and family petition applications. In addition to direct representation, we provide case management and other social services to at-risk clients and partner with community-based organizations from around the nation on education and advocacy projects that benefit the LGBTQ+ immigrant community.

Primary Responsibilities

Work with LGBTQ+ asylum applicants under direct attorney supervision

Help fill out immigration forms and draft client declarations

Research relevant case law and country conditions documentation

Qualifications

  • Eligible for The Federal Work-Study Program
  • Current 2,3, or 4L Law Student in good standing with SJCL
  • Ideally, fluency in spoken and written Spanish is strongly preferred
  • Student will need to have availability for min. of two semesters
  • Flexible schedule within the business day, 8-5pm Monday-Friday. Maximum of 20 hours a week

Physical Abilities

Ability to sit, and bend, reach in all directions: adequate sight or corrected vision for the purpose of reading printed or written materials; hear and speak to communicate with coworkers and the public; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate instructional equipment. Hourly Pay: This is a seasonal, at-will, non-exempt position. Compensation is $20 per hour.
