Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the entrance level in the Deputy District Attorney flexible classification series. This classification is distinguished from Deputy District Attorney II by requiring the performance of basic legal tasks under close supervision; Deputy District Attorney II requires handling legal tasks of average difficulty with less supervision. Promotion to Deputy District Attorney II is considered on a merit basis subject to recommendation by the District Attorney and approval by the Director of Personnel.
- Researches and prepares cases of average difficulty for prosecution.
- Negotiates with defense attorneys regarding the disposition or modification of charges in misdemeanor cases.
- Makes recommendations for dispositions of felony cases of average difficulty.
- Interviews witnesses in preparation for court proceedings.
Other Functions:
- Assists Deputy District Attorney I or Law Clerks in preparation and presentation of basic legal tasks.
- Files, prepares, and presents cases against minors in juvenile court as assigned.
- Assists higher level attorneys in preparation and presentation of more difficult cases as required.
- Performs related work as required.
Employment Standards:
Level I: Licensed by the California State Bar and the ability to travel to locations outside of the regular office to perform necessary legal services; Basic knowledge of the principles of law and their application, trial procedure and the rules of evidence; legal research methods; Basic ability to present statements of fact, law and argument clearly and logically.
Salary:
Level I: $6,599.93- $7,887.53 Monthly
*Recruitment Bonus: The County will provide all employees hired on or after April 22,2023 in a permanent capacity as a Deputy District Attorney or a Child Support Attorney a $15,000 non-pensionable recruitment bonus. The bonus shall be payable in full upon appointment by the District Attorney of Director of Child Support Services subject to completion of a five-year term of service with the hiring department.
